My Journey to the 7th International and 18th Academic Congress of Geriatrics Congress with the COST PROGRAMMING ITC Conference Grant

I recently had the opportunity to attend the 7th International and 18th Academic Congress with the support of the COST PROGRAMMING ITC Conference Grant. Attending this prestigious event was an incredibly enriching experience for my career, and I am happy to share my experiences with you.

At the congress, I had the opportunity to give an oral presentation titled ‘Osteoporotic Vertebral Fractures: Truly Silent’. In my presentation, we highlighted the importance of direct vertebral imaging and comprehensive geriatric evaluation in the diagnosis of osteoporosis in geriatric patients. We have demonstrated that patients with osteoporosis may be overlooked, especially when the diagnosis is made using DEXA alone without vertebral imaging, and that vertebral osteoporotic fractures are closely associated with many geriatric syndromes such as frailty, sarcopenia, slow walking speed, malnutrition risk and dependence in daily and instrumental activities of living. The topic resonated with many clinicians and researchers, highlighting a critical diagnostic gap in geriatric care.

The rich scientific program presented throughout the conference allowed me to learn about the latest innovations and best practices in the field of geriatrics.

Especially the sessions about topics of sarcopenia, dementia, biomarker use and innovative treatments in Alzheimer’s disease, osteoporosis and management of osteoporosis in conditions such as chronic renal failure and also geropsychiatry were very insightful. The take-home message from the congress was clear: creating an individual approach through comprehensive geriatric assessment, a holistic approach to aging and accompanying geriatric syndromes is essential.

This congress provided a very useful platform not only for exchanging information but also for establishing valuable connections. I had the opportunity to meet researchers, clinicians, and academics from various institutions.

In conclusion, the 7th International and 18th Academic Congress of Geriatrics Congress was an unforgettable experience for both my personal and professional development. I sincerely thank the COST Action program for providing this opportunity. I look forward to continuing to follow developments in the field of geriatrics and contributing to this important area.

Sincerely,
