My Experience at the 20th EuGMS Congress in Valencia

I recently had the honor of attending and presenting at the 20th EuGMS (European Geriatric Medicine Society) Congress in Valencia, Spain. The congress was a vibrant gathering of professionals and researchers from all over Europe, dedicated to the field of geriatric medicine and aging. As a researcher and ITC grant holder, this congress provided a fantastic platform for me to share my work, learn from leading experts, and establish connections that will shape future research collaborations.

What I Shared: The 60+ Collaborative Learning University

My presentation focused on the “Founding of the 60+ Collaborative Learning University”, a project aimed at promoting lifelong learning and active aging for individuals aged 60 and above. This initiative, which encourages older adults to engage in educational activities, focus on if this model effective tool for enhancing their cognitive health, social interaction, and overall quality of life. I shared insights into how the program is designed to be an inclusive and age-friendly learning environment and discussed some of the positive outcomes we have observed so far, such as improved mental well-being and increased community engagement among participants.

The presentation was well-received, with many attendees expressing interest in how such model exists in other countries such as UK and this model could be improved and adapted other European contexts. There was a great deal of curiosity around the methodology, scalability, and potential collaborations to implement similar programs elsewhere. This feedback affirmed the importance of education as a pillar of healthy aging and the potential for broader application of this model.

What I Learned: Latest Trends in Geriatric Medicine

The congress was filled with informative sessions and workshops covering the latest research and developments in geriatric medicine. I attended several sessions that explored cutting-edge topics such as digital health tools for older adults, the role of nutrition and physical activity in aging, and the impact of cognitive interventions on dementia prevention. These insights were particularly relevant to my interest of studies, as they emphasized the importance of a holistic approach to aging that includes not only medical care but also healthy agein and digitalisation.

One key takeaway for me was the recognition of how interdisciplinary the field of geriatrics has become. The integration of education, healthcare, and policy is crucial for addressing the complex needs of aging populations, and it was encouraging to see so many professionals from different fields collaborating to find solutions.

Networking and Collaboration: Expanding Horizons

In addition to the knowledge I gained, the congress was an excellent opportunity to network with like-minded professionals.

Key Messages: Lifelong Learning is Vital for Healthy Aging

Overall, my participation in the EuGMS Congress highlighted the growing recognition of lifelong learning as a key element of healthy aging. Programs like the 60+ Collaborative Learning University are crucial not only for maintaining cognitive health but also for fostering social inclusion and active participation in society.
