We are proud and happy to announce an important development concerning the future of training in geriatrics medicine – the European Geriatric Medicine Specialty Exam (EGeMSE) is launched, and the first exam will be organized on 23rd April 2025.
This Exam is designed to standardize and achieve a uniformly high standard of knowledge by geriatricians across Europe, offering the specialists the possibility to be recognized in their geriatric medicine knowledge, and ensuring that physicians meet the highest standards of clinical competence and medical knowledge, regardless of where they are trained. This will not only benefit patients by enhancing the quality of care, but also foster greater mobility for healthcare professionals, who will be better equipped to practice across national borders within the European Union and beyond.
We would like to emphasize that this Exam is intended to complement and strengthen existing national assessments, not to replace them. Sitting the Exam is optional, additional to national exams and training requirements (not mandatory). By harmonizing our efforts, we can collectively improve medical education while maintaining the unique strengths of each country’s healthcare system.
The Exam is organized in cooperation with Royal College of Physicians (UK) based on the same UEMS model as the exams like The European Board of Gastroenterology & Hepatology Examination and The European Certificate in Nephrology.

We kindly request your assistance in spreading awareness of this development among your national geriatric community. Your influence and guidance will be invaluable in fostering a dialogue that ensures the successful implementation of this initiative. We believe that the involvement of national medical societies is crucial for the smooth introduction of European Geriatric Medicine Specialty Exam and its acceptance at the grassroots level.
Please find attached the information of the Exam which we kindly ask you to distribute via channels available for your society. Should you have any questions or require further details regarding the Exam, I would be happy to provide additional information.
